Auto Darkening Welding Helmet Review
Auto darkening helmets have been around for at least 15 years now but the first auto darkening helmets on the market were not worth the matches it would have taken to set them on fire. I remember a vendor leaving an auto darkening welding helmet with me for my review 15 years ago. It gave me so many problems that I think he was embarrassed to come and get it back. I got flashed a lot and the corners of the auto darkening lens did not even darken like they were supposed to. This was no cheap welding helmet either. It sold for around 400 bones. An auto darkening helmet that costs over 400 dollars is not supposed to flash you and have blotchy areas. Fast forward to now, 2008 and there are so many auto darkening helmets available it can make your head spin. Should you buy a top of the line auto darkening helmet and pay over 300 dollars, or should you take a chance on a cheaper one? Are the cheap auto darkening helmets any good? Some are good, but some are junk.
First of all, if you are a hobbyist type welder, getting an auto darkening helmet will make you wonder why you didn't do it sooner. It makes that much difference. Just being able to see exactly where the gun is pointed before pulling the trigger will save you lots of grinding and will make the whole process be more enjoyable. An auto darkening welding helmet is worth whatever it costs because it will save you so much aggravation. But it is hard to think about forking out 300 bones for a top of the line auto darkening welding helmet you might only use once a month.
- If you weld for a living, dont even consider the cost, just get the best helmet, with the best features, the most reputable brand with the best warranty.
- But if you are a hobbyist welder, or just want to buy an extra welding helmet for home use, here are a few suggestions to help you decide what to do:
- Once you decide you are going to get one make sure to check out the specs on any auto darkening helmet you are considering,
- Really good auto darkening helmets darken in 1 - 25000ths of a second, stay away from anything less.
Also, get one that is adjustable from 9-13 shade. If you have not done much welding, you will not know how sensitive your eyes are to welding. A shade 10 is standard for all around hobby use but I have known people whose eyes hurt after welding with a 10 shade. They needed an 11 or 12 shade to be comfortable. If you opt for a fixed shade 10 and it is not dark enough. Your are kind of screwed!
Sensitivity and delay settings are a must so that you can make the proper adjustments when welding outdoors or in poor lighting conditions.
A delay feature comes in handy in keeping you from getting flashed. By setting the delay, if something gets in the way of your light sensors, having a delay set will alloy the sensors to pick up the light signal again before you get flashed.

How to Weld Sheet Metal - MIG Welding Sheet Steel With a Hobart Handler 140
Sheet metal, like car body panels, can be welded with a 115 volt mig welder like a Hobart Handler 140 IF you are willing to do these 5 things...
- Get a decent mig welding machine, preferably a good 115 volt mig welder like a Hobart Handler 140.
(Actually, 115 volt mig welders are often the best choice for welding sheet metal and a Hobart Handler 140 has all the features needed to weld thin sheet metal or even up to ¼" thick steel.)
- Get a gas conversion kit so you can run .023" bare wire. ( the Hobart mig welder comes with gas conversion)
Don't even think about trying to weld in an auto body patch with flux core wire. You need to get a mig welder that has a gas conversion kit so that you can use 75/25 gas and use .023" bare wire like E70s6 or E70s3.
- Get some 75/25 gas (thats 75 argon and 25 c02)
Pure Co2 is not what you want. Its fine for welding thicker steel, but for thinner sheet metal, 75/25 argon/Co2 is the ticket. It is more versatile too.
- Get an auto darkening welding helmet...(Especially if you are a noob.)
Moving even slightly off the mark before you pull the trigger can make the difference between a good weld and a big blob of crap that will have to be ground off. Unless you love to grind, get yourself a decent auto darkening welding helmet. Being able to see exactly where the tip of your wire is when you pull the trigger on the mig gun makes a huge difference.
- Use a hammer and dolly often to spread out the contractile stresses.
Sheet metal warps when you weld it... period. You can't stop it, all you can do is try to control it and then fix it. A hammer and dolly used intermittently between small stitch welds is what the pro's do to keep metal from distorting too much.
Welding sheet metal takes a bit of patience and finesse. But if you are willing to follow the rules. You can do it.

How to Weld With a Wire Feed Welder
How do you weld with a wire welder?
Man, that's a loaded question. Why? because there are so many applications where a Mig welder is used.
First off, lets gets some terminology cleared up. The AWS (American Welding Society) would appreciate it if we all called it Gas Metal Arc Welding. They have been working on that for over 20 years... Even though about 90% of all welders still call it "MIG". They just wont give up.
I call it MIG too. But some people just call it "wire welding".
It doesn't matter what you call it, its the same thing. So let me give you a few tips on how to weld with a wire welder.
Lets start off with the little 115 volt wire welders. They are the best thing since sliced bread for auto body panels and thin sheet metal. The Hobart Handler 140 is a good machine for welding auto body panels because it comes with a gas conversion kit.and will run small .023" wire.
You need .023" bare E70S6 wire, 75/25 Argon CO2 gas, and a steady hand. Always weld thin sheet metal downhill when you can, and in short runs with an air nozzle handy to cool each half inch bead before you start the next one.
For trailers and trailer hitches, ditch the 115 volt mig welder and step up to a 230 volt mig welder.
The Hobart Handler 187 is a good choice. It will run .023" wire for thin sheet metal, but also will go up to 185 amps and use .035" bare wire or flux core for thicker metal where penetration is critical. You still need 75/25 gas and some E70S6 bare wire. But you can use .023" bare wire for thinner steel and .035" bare wire for higher amperages.
So how do you weld with these wire welders? Here is the rundown...
- Make sure the machine leads are hooked up with the electrode positive.
- Set flowmeter gas flow to about 20-25 cfh
- Use the right size drive rollers to match the wire you are using
- Make sure the contact tip is flush with the nozzle
- Set Voltage and wire feed speed using the chart that comes with the machine you are using.
- Hold the torch close to the work so that there is only about 1/2" of wire sticking out from the contact tip to the weld.
- Dont get carried away with torch angle...5-10 degrees works in either direction for most applications.
- Practice on scrap before you weld the real deal.
- If the weld you are making is critical, do some destructive tests with a hammer on a mock up weld first.
- get an auto darkening welding helmet so you know exactly where to light up

Stick Welding - Tips and Tricks to Make You an Slick Stick Welder
Ok maybe not slick, but at least a little better.
Stick welding is still called Arc welding by a whole lot of folks. So rather than buck the trend, I will just go with the flow and use both terms.
1.The first thing you need to know to be a good stick welder is that you need a decent arc welding machine. Not a great machine, just a decent arc welding machine. Like a Lincoln 225 A/C tombstone arc welder, or a Miller Thunderbolt Stick welding machine. Both can be bought on eBay or Craigslist for around 200 bucks.
2. The second thing you need is a decent auto darkening welding helmet. 50 bucks will get you a decent auto darkening welding helmet if you know where to look. A decent auto darkening helmet darkens in 1/20000 sec, is adjustable from 9-12 shade, and has sensitivity and delay settings.
Why do you need one? Because when you are scratching around in the dark, you can be off track by an inch or more and you will get arc strikes all over the place. With an auto darkening helmet, you can see exactly where you are striking your arc and that alone will make you a better stick welder.
3. The third thing you need to know is that polarity matters. If you buy an A/C only welding machine, then you need to get stick welding rods that are designed to weld on A/C.
Not all stick welding rods work on A/C . That why grandpa only had 6013 welding rods lying around.
6011, 6013, and 7018 will weld on A/C, but 6010 wont. If you like welding with 6010, buy an A/C and DC stick welding machine. You can usually get one for only about a 100 dollars more than what you would pay for a A/C buzz box. Another bonus in buying a stick welding machine that also welds with DC current is that you can hook up a scratch start TIG torch later if you want to venture into TIG welding.
4. Lastly, learn to hold a close arc. This is the most important advise I can give. If your rod sticks when you hold a close arc length, then you need more amperage or you need to use a smaller diameter rod. Holding a close arc will not only help you set your amperage right, but for welding in overhead and vertical positions , it really helps the metal and sparks stay where they are supposed to...on the weld and not all on you.
