Meridians of comfort People working in forge welding were once exposed to the highest risks: welding used to be associated with toxic fumes, dangerously glaring light and very high heat development. Although protective measures in this field and especially the quality of the protective welding shields have been continuously improved, this kind of work remains associated with inconvenience, since such protective shields have to be worn over long periods. The design of the 3M Speedglas 9100 combines a high degree of protection with a sophisticated ergonomic concept for this particularly difficult working area. In contrast to rigid welding shields, this shield is flexible and offers the wearer more comfort, since it is adjustable to fit the welder's personal preferences. The design centres on an offset pivot that reduces the leverage forces of the shield to a minimum -- giving it a clear and friendly appearance. An outstanding approach in the design has been the use of insights from Eastern acupressure techniques. According to this very old method in Chinese medicine, it is the meridians (nerve tracts) of the head in particular that influence the whole body and that too much pressure can negatively influence the well-being of a person. This welding shield thus merges Western and Eastern ergonomics into a design that effectively avoids pressure on sensitive nerves. Equipped with an innovative auto-darkening glass, the shield also protects the wearer's eyes against bright ...
